Tufts in Annecy

Tufts in Annecy offers university students an opportunity to improve their beginner or intermediate French language skills in a very inspiring environment. French language classes are taught at CILFA (Centre Internationale de la Langue Française à Annecy), our partner institute in Annecy, specialized in teaching French as a second language. CILFA has been affiliated with the University of Savoie since 1999. French language classes at CILFA are taught by native French speakers who are FLE professionals and experts in developing speaking, listening, grammar, writing, and reading skills. Tufts' affiliation with CILFA provides students with quality language instruction and additional integration into the local culture. Tufts in Annecy students are placed in French language course specific to their skill level, attending language classes in Annecy and participating in regional cultural excursions for twenty hours per week.
Although Tufts in Annecy courses are provided by our partner institute CILFA, final grades are determined by the accompanying faculty member from the Tufts French department. Tufts in Annecy grades are added to each student’s Tufts transcript.
In addition to language courses at CILFA, Tufts in Annecy students are accompanied by a faculty member from the Tufts French Department who oversees their placement into the appropriate language class and level at CILFA and who follows the progress of each Tufts in Annecy student. Our faculty member provides academic support and guidance as well as personalized individual tutoring to supplement the CILFA classes, and administers the final Tufts University French grade. Tufts in Annecy students are also supported and assisted by the Tufts University European Center staff in Talloires.
Residing with a French family complements language classes, facilitates language acquisition, and enhances the exploration of French customs and culture.
Before You Apply
It is very important that student applicants consult our Preparing to Go pages before applying to study in Talloires. Living in another country and navigating a new culture are wonderful experiences, but not without challenges. Understanding this ahead of time will help students make an informed decision about participating in the program. There are also many important practical aspects to consider before you apply including finances, visa status, and more.
Eligibility
The Tufts in Annecy program is open to all students who meet the following criteria:
- Students must have completed one year of university studies.
- Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing. "Good standing" means that a student is not on Disciplinary Probation or on Academic Probation. For a further explanation of "good standing," please refer to the Tufts Student Code of Conduct, found online via the Student Life website: https://students.tufts.edu/student-affairs/student-code-conduct
- Students are expected to have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (on a scale of 4.0). Freshman registrations will be held as pending until the first semester transcript is submitted to the European Center, no later than the first day of spring semester classes
Non-Tufts Students
- Students from institutions other than Tufts University who are interested in the Tufts in Annecy Program must:
- Meet the criteria listed above
- Submit an official transcript from their home institution
- Provide a letter of recommendation from your current French professor or academic advisor. Letters should be sent directly to the Tufts European Center at europeancenter@tufts.edu and should address your readiness for an intensive academic and cultural exchange program.
